Windows Live Essentials Tool for Your Desktop

In November, Microsoft released a major update to its Windows Live online services. Today, Microsoft also released the new versions of its Windows Live Essentials desktop tools that accompany the online services. The Windows Live Essentials suite includes updates for Live Mail, Live Messenger, Live Writer, Live Photo Gallery, Live Movie Maker, Live Toolbar, Office Outlook Connector, and Windows Live Family Safety. There are also a two new additions: Windows Live Sync and the Office Live Add-In. Silverlight is now also part of the Live Essentials suite.

Connecting the Desktop to the Cloud :
All of these applications are meant to complement the Windows Live online experience and work closely together. You can, for example, use Windows Live Sync to keep your online and offline photo albums in sync. Live Sync has replaced FolderShare and allows you to sync any kind of file to the 25GB of space that Microsoft's SkyDrive online storage service now offers.
We tested the new versions of the Live Essentials for the last few weeks and all of them represent a major update to the older versions.
Even if you don't typically use the Microsoft's Live services, installing the Live Photo Gallery, for example, is well worth a try thanks to its seamless integration with Live Photos and SkyDrive. This new version compares quite well with Google's Picasa 3 and also lets you upload photos to Flickr. Photo Gallery also ties in with other Microsoft tools like Auto Collage or PhotoSynth.
Windows Live Writer, on the other hand, is more of an evolutionary update, but it is the favorite blogging client for a lot of us Windows users here at RWW and the update makes handling media files a lot easier.
Also worth a look are the enhanced Live Toolbar and the Windows Live Messenger, which has received a major facelift. The Live Toolbar (IE only) now displays your updates from the Windows Live online services, including new messages and pictures from friends. You can also use the toolbar to sync your IE7 and 8 bookmarks between different computers.

Software Plus Services :
The real selling point for the Live Essentials suite, however, is how well all the apps play together, both online and offline. Live Photos, for example, can use your Live Messenger and Hotmail contact lists for tagging faces, or the Live Messenger connecting to your status updates on your Live Profile page. The one Live Service that has remained behind, though, is Live Mesh, which seems to be on its own development track. We assume, however, that it will be merged into the Live services at some point.

Simple Trick to speedup your Firefox

THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE TRICK. NO SOFTWARE REQUIRED.

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit enter. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

Softbank's 823SF Tiffany diamond handset for $130,265

Japan's Softbank Mobile unveiled a line of luxury mobile phones which have been encrusted with diamonds, and Softbank has said they will sell a limited run of just ten mobile phones each studded with 537 diamonds from Tiffany & Co with a total weight of 18.34 carats.

The company has launched ten limited-edition Tiffany phones at a whopping price tag of 12.98 million yen ($130,265). Of these, eight limited-edition phones were sold out in just three days.
Japan is the world's largest market for luxury goods and nearly everyone owns a cellphone, leading fashion companies to try to tap into the mobile market.

As Orkut saying in Orkut Help Centre you can use the 'Find friends' feature to import your email contact list from Gmail and other email services (Hotmail, AOL, rediff.com, and mail.ru), to see who's already on orkut. You can also invite any of your email contacts to join orkut if they haven't yet.
To see who in your contact list already uses orkut, follow these steps:

1. Go to the 'my friends' section on the right-side of your orkut profile or homepage.
2. Click view all.
3. Click the find more friends >> link at the top-right of the page.
4. To find your Gmail contacts, simply click the find friends button. If you want to import contacts from another email account, enter your email address and password for that account, and then click find friends. You'll then see your email contacts who are already on orkut, but aren't in your friends list.
5. Select the people you'd like to add as friends on orkut, and click add selected friends to send them friend requests.

If you don't want to add anyone on this list as an orkut friend, you can skip the first step and move on to sending new orkut invites, by clicking skip adding friends. Here's what you need to do:

1. Select the contacts you'd like to invite.
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, write a personal message in your invites, if you wish to, and enter a word verification in the text box.
3. Click invite selected contacts.

Google Earth comes to the iPhone

No doubt many of you have frittered away several hours through the sheer exploration possibilities offered by the Google Earth program. Perhaps some of you may even have wished you could have this little application everywhere you go. If so, then you're in luck: in a posting on Google's LatLong blog, Product Manager Peter Birch announced that the Google Earth application is making its debut in the iTunes App Store today (available here).
According to Mr. Birch, the iPhone's touch interface provides a very natural way for to interact with the interface. Swiping your fingers will move the map around, while pinching in and out controls the zoom. Using the iPhone's GPS, users can instantly go to their current location in the application. In addition, Panoramio integration allows users access to over eight million user submitted photos of locations.

A freely-available software developed by US researchers promises to track stolen laptops through the Internet, and even click a photograph of the thief.

Engineers at the University of Washington have dubbed the new theft-protection tool ‘Adeona’, after the Roman goddess of safe returns, and it can be downloaded for Linux, Windows, and Mac at adeona.cs.washington.edu.

“Adeona is free and easy to install, so anyone who owns a laptop, or even a small company, can use it to track their assets,” said researcher Gabriel Maganis. “We’re really hoping laptop users all over the world will install it on their machines.”

Once Adeona is installed, the notebook PC will occasionally send its Internet protocol address and related information to OpenDHT, a free online storage network. This information can be used to establish the computer’s general location.

On a Mac, Adeona also uses the computer’s internal camera to take a photo that it sends to the same server. All the actions are done discreetly, without letting the user know.

And the information is secure and discreet. Adeona scrambles the data, so it must be deciphered using a password known only by the owner who set up the account.

The technology’s open-source nature also means it could be adapted for use in cellphones and other mobile devices. The boffins say they have already received requests for an iPhone version.
Adeona only requires downloading and installing a small software client. Adeona is free to use.

Microsoft Corp released on Last week a second test version of Internet Explorer 8, delivering a feature-complete upgrade to the world's most widely used Web browser.

The world's largest software maker said the latest version -- beta 2 -- of Internet Explorer, which has a market share of about 75 percent, comes with new features to enhance privacy, ease-of-use, and security.

Microsoft first released a test -- or beta 1 -- version of IE 8 in March, but that was aimed at letting Web developers take a first look at the new browser. This latest version is aimed at a broader consumer audience.

The company would not disclose when it planned to officially launch IE 8 nor how many people are expected to download the test version of the new browser. It released Internet Explorer 7 in October 2006.

Microsoft has pledged to deliver more regular updates of Internet Explorer, whose lead has been chipped away by Mozilla's Firefox browser.

The latest version of Internet Explorer replicates features found in Firefox 3, the latest version of that Web browser, including a "smart" address bar that remembers and redirects user to website addresses they have visited before.

Internet Explorer 8 also offers a mode called "InPrivate Browsing," which ensures that history, temporary Internet files and cookies are not recorded on a user's PC.

There is also a security feature that allows a user to block content coming from third-parties trying to track and aggregate the user's online behavior.

Microsoft also updated already announced features such as "Activities," which allows a user to use information found on one page, such as an address, in conjunction with an online service such as mapping without leaving the original site.

Google Chrome is a brand new browser by Google. It has alot of features: such as the Security site and UI site. At the UI side, the Chrome seperate each windows into tabs and each tab actually is a process. You can try to open 3 tabs in your Chrome and you will find out 3 child process under your Google Chrome parent process.

This helps to give a boundary to each process so that malware cannot affect other tab or even your browser. Actually the navigation UI very similar to Safari browser. The new tab page even can shown all the recently visited pages or websites and because of each of the tab is separated into process it makes the posibility to detach your tab into new window of Chrome very fast and easy, or vise versa. Omnibox is applied in the address bar. It allow you to key in some related keywords and press “TAB”, some of the auto complete list is listed there.
There are quite number of developer tools or application to help your web development. For example, the Javascript Console and DOM Inspector. GMDesk : Run Google Web Appications into a Single Desktop Application

All platforms with Adobe AIR: Free desktop application GMDesk provides quick access to Google services in a standalone window separate from your browser. GMDesk separates Gmail, Google Reader, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Google Maps from the rest of your web browsing, and provides keyboard shortcuts to switch between them (Ctrl+ or Cmd+1 through 6).

You can't install browser add-ons like Better Gmail or Better GReader in GMDesk, and currently it displays too-small text in Gmail (though the developer is working on a fix for that). Ultimately GMDesk doesn't offer many features that make it worth using (or much better than apps like Prism or Fluid), but it raises the question: If Google released native desktop apps like Picasa for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Reader, and Google Docs, would you use them? Until they do (which may be never), GMDesk is a free download and requires Adobe AIR to run.

10 Awesome Applications for BlackBerry

The BlackBerry application marketplace might not be as easy to navigate at Apple’s App Store and Java might not be as much fun as Cocoa Touch for developers, but there are still some great BlackBerry applications out there.

1. Opera Mini -- BlackBerry 4.5 is supposed to have a much-improved built-in browser (my carrier hasn't officially upgraded yet, so I'm unsure), but Opera Mini is a great alternative. It isn't as fast as the built-in browser and functionality like copy/paste isn't as nicely integrated, but you can actually view pages the way they look on a regular computer (more or less) and zoom in on parts of the screen for easy access. If you ever want to post a comment to a blog or fill out another big text field, Opera Mini is the way to go.

2. Flickr -- This official BlackBerry client was released in June and beats the pants off of uploading via e-mail. You can go straight to the camera from the Flick app or choose a photo from your media card or one of your media directories.

3. Facebook -- Update your status, read your messages, post messages to your friends walls and send pictures directly to your photo page. It's pretty slick.

4. NewsGator Go ! -- Some people just love Google Reader. I am not one of these people. On the desktop, I use NetNewsWire, on my BlackBerry, I use NewsGator Go!. Like all the NewsGator products, its free. Sign up for a free NewsGator Online account or link it with your existing account. What's so nice about the NewsGator family of products is that they all sync together. So if you use FeedDemon on a PC or NetNewsWire on the Mac, you can access all of your feeds from any other computer just using NewsGator's web reader (which I think is 100x better than Google Reader). That also means that you can access all your feeds on your BlackBerry. And anything you mark as read on one device, shows up as read on the others.

5. Blackbird -- I used to use Twitterberry to update my Twitter status from my phone, but now I've switched to Blackbird. The interface is cleaner and it feels faster. I miss the user icon pictures from Twitterberry, this is still my favorite way of using Twitter.

6. BBMetaBlog -- iPhone users have access to official WordPress and TypePad blog clients and more than one unofficial Tumblr clients, but BlackBerry users, we've been all but forgotten in the world of moblogging software. TypePad users can use TypePad Mobile BlackBerry and Blogger users can use Blogger for BlackBerry, but what about people who use XML-RPC based blogs? BBMetaBlog is not perfect -- it was designed to interface with a custom blog-engine for Lotus Domino, not for WordPress or Movable Type or any other system that uses the MetaWeblog API implementation of XML-RPC -- but it works. Just set your access URL to your XMLRPC URI and you're set! Categories and tagging doesn't work, but it's a better alternative to e-mail and it can be faster than trying to post with Opera Mini.

7.Google Suite -- Google's Mobile tools for BlackBerry are awesome. The Gmail app is fast, the Google News page is easy to navigate and Google's mobile mapping tool is the best! Even if you don't have GPS, you can have GPS-like functionality on your phone. Google Sync for BlackBerry keeps your BlackBerry calendar synced up with Google Calendar, and it's a two way sync -- which is always great.

8.Sudoku -- The unregistered version won't let you download daily new puzzles, but still comes with a couple of hundred at three difficulty levels. If you've mastered Brick Breaker (or Brick Breaker has mastered you), it's a great way to kill some time.

9. Mobile Quotes and Analysis for BlackBerry -- Even though the quotes are time-delayed (I want a Google Finance BlackBerry app -- not just a web page, an app!), this is a fast, free way to keep track of the market.

Android apps: What would you want?

Arguably one of the best things to come out of the iPhone 2.0 firmware update, as well as the launch of the iPhone 3G, is the ability for the iPhone to install third-party applications directly to the phone via the App Store. Well, Google's new Android OS will also support such a service in the form of the Android Market.

As Google announced on Thursday, the Android Market is an online marketplace that will let you find, buy, download, and rate applications (which sounds eerily similar to the iPhone App Store). And, as you can see from the example screen shots, it appears that applications like a ringtone editor, a talking compass, and a barcode scanner, are already in the works.

This brings up the question of the kind of applications we would want for the Android phone. Access to Google apps like Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Google Reader is a given (we assume), so that leaves the door wide open for more innovative applications. We would personally love to see a multi-IM client, and an Android equivalent of the iPhone's song-identification apps like Shazam would be nice, too. One thing we would really love is turn-by-turn directions, which the iPhone currently lacks.

Raj Saraf, CMD, Zenith Computers, said the newly launched, low cost laptop, will cater across all the segments, including the students and educational institutions in particular. “This initiative is a part of our continuous effort to foster advanced and hassle free computing experience. With the EcoStyle PC, Zenith is bringing a true low-cost PC which underlines performance and affordability for the consumers he added,” he added.

When asked, if the economy reeling under the global slowdown, along all the industry verticals, will have enough takers for the laptops, Saraf positively asserted, “I don’t see any impact of slowdown as the penetration of PCs in the country is still very low”.

I know what you're doing, you're trying it right now because you think i'm full of crap. I wouldn't have believed it either, until I tried it.
This has to rank right up there with one of the strangest windows quirks i've run into. From what I gather, it's to keep people from taking screenshots of movies.

Yahoo Buzz is basically an equivalent to Digg. You discover a good post (or your always-good post :D) and then submit to share it to the world.

If people like the story, they can vote buzz on the post and spread it even more to other people. So bloggers, you must have been wondering how to put Yahoo Buzz button on your blog easily so that your readers can start submitting your posts on Yahoo Buzz.

Note that you don’t need to register for Yahoo Buzz if you already have a Yahoo account.

Effective 20 August 2008, customers traveling on American’s Boeing 767-200 aircraft can access complete coast-to-coast coverage on nonstop flights between New York and San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles, and New York and Miami. American, the world’s largest airline and founding member of the oneworld® Alliance, and Aircell, the world’s leading provider of airborne communications, have joined together to bring the first full inflight broadband service to the U.S. market.

“We are pleased to provide our customers with the unprecedented ability to stay connected to their family, friends and business associates on the ground via the Internet while traveling at 30,000 feet above the United States,” said Dan Garton, American’s Executive Vice President - Marketing. “With today’s launch, American Airlines makes history as the first and only U.S. airline to offer customers full inflight Internet connectivity, demonstrating once again our industry leadership and focus on our customers.”

Aircell’s Gogo will be available to customers as a fee-based service in all cabins. Aircell will charge $12.95 on flights more than three hours, which include American’s Boeing 767-200 flights. Each paid Gogo session includes full Internet access. Cell phone and Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) services are not available.

Gogo turns an American Airlines flight into a Wi-Fi hotspot, enabling passengers to surf the Web, check any email, Instant Message, access a corporate VPN, and more. Once the aircraft has reached 10,000 feet, users can simply turn on their Wi-Fi enabled devices such as laptops, smartphones and PDAs, open their browsers and be directed to the Gogo portal page where they sign up and begin surfing. Yahoo Buzz now Open for Everyone

Finally six months after its launch, Yahoo! Buzz is now open to the public. The announcement follows several months of beta testing the service to selected sites, including the SE Journal. Yahoo claims that Buzz now has around 5 million users and sites which were selected to implement the content voting system has indicated increase in traffic since they embed the Buzz button on their site.

With the good feedback coming from early adopters, it is but logical that Yahoo opens up its Yahoo Buzz to the public. And it looks like Digg has got some competition now in the site voting niche. Although Digg has been around for quite some time now and most of us are already accustomed to the Digg culture, Yahoo Buzz though poses one advantage. And that is, content being buzzed up can be easily featured on Yahoo search page.

Block Certain Websites from Children at Home

[For non-techie parents who have a computer at home and are worried about their kids safety online.]

A mother recently wrote saying she is very concerned that her young children are spending too much time on websites like Orkut, MySpace and Facebook.

Her worries are not just about children wasting time on the Internet - it’s more about the activities that children are doing on these sites. She is concerned that children could be interacting with complete strangers (or online predators) and even sharing personal information.

And with some news reports saying that criminal activities could have been planned on Orkut, the mother has finally made up her mind to restrict access to Orkut and some other websites on the home computer.

The only problem is that she has absolutely no clue about how to block websites – parental control software like Net Nanny or Norton Internet Security are pretty good but they cost money.

Now before you take this extreme step of blocking website (that is very likely to be opposed by children), try a few things:

Educate your children about the dangers of sharing information online with strangers. Family members should talk in detail about privacy and the web.
Place the computer in the living area of your home from where you can easily see the screen so you’ll have some idea about activities that children are doing on the computer including the websites they are visiting frequently.
Orkut is an open social network – that means you can easily see who’s in the friends’ list of your children and what kind of text notes (or scraps) are they exchanging with each.

Finally, to block websites on your home computer without investing in expensive software, here’s the trick (for Windows PCs):

Step 1: Click the Start button and select Run. Now type the following text in that Run box:

notepad c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Step 2: You will see a new notepad window on your screen containing some cryptic information. Don’t panic. Just goto the last line of the file, hit the enter key and type the following:

127.0.0.1 orkut.com
127.0.0.1 facebook.com
127.0.0.1 myspace.com

Save the file and exit. That’s it. None of the above sites will now open on your computer.

You can block as many websites as you like with the above technique. If you want to remove the ban later, open the same file as mentioned in Step 1 and delete the above lines.

Pretty simple but remember, our children are also very smart. And there are some popular ways to unblock websites.

Twitter Stops SMS to UK saysCarrier Cost Too High

Twitter has stopped sending out tweets via SMS in the UK, claiming the popularity of the service has made the cost too prohibitive without carriers reducing costs it has to pay. Without Twitter actually having figured out a business model yet, it was always destined to be this way.

Last night co-founder Biz Stone explained: ”When you send one message to Twitter and we send it to 10 followers, you aren’t charged ten times - that’s because we’ve been footing the bill. When we launched our free SMS service to the world, we set the clock ticking. As the service grew in popularity, so too would the price.” Seems obvious really.

Stone said he had managed to strike relationships in the US, Canada and India that absolved it of the necessity to pass on SMS carrier fees to customers; just not anywhere else. Twitter first got spooked about the problem when it capped UK SMSes at 250 per week in November, but the site has raised $15 million VC since then, taking it up to $20 million. If that money isn’t going in to carrier fees, where exactly is it going?

It’s the latest part of the Twitter service to bite the dust, after the instant messenger link was recently shut off. This is a particular blow because Twitter is said to be most popular, proportionally, in the UK. So it’s clear Twitter has to start making money somehow soon.

“It pains us to take this measure,” Stone said. “Even with a limit of 250 messages received per week, it could cost Twitter about $1,000 per user, per year to send SMS outside of Canada, India, or the US. It makes more sense for us to establish fair billing arrangements with mobile operators than it does to pass these high fees on to our users.” Instead, users have been told to use mobile web or mobile widget versions. British Twitterati have formed a Facebook group to lobby for carriers to “cut Twitter a decent deal”.

Configuring Microsoft Outlook for Gmail POP3 Access

follow these steps to configure Gmail and Outlook account use:

In the Outlook main menu, click Tools, then E-mail Accounts. This launches the E-mail Accounts wizard.
Select Add a new e-mail account, then click Next.
Select POP3, then click Next.

Enter your Gmail account information here for Outlook 2003.

Enter your name (as you want it to appear in the From field of messages) into the Your Name field.
Enter your full Gmail email address, which is your username followed by "@gmail.com", in the E-mail Address field.
Enter your Gmail username in the User Name field.
Enter your Gmail password in the Password field.
Enter "pop.gmail.com" in the Incoming mail server (POP3) field.
Enter "smtp.gmail.com" in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field.
Click More Settings to open the Internet E-mail Settings dialog box.
Click the Outgoing Server tab.
Set the My outgoing server requires authentication check box.
Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Incoming server (POP3), set the This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) check box.
Under Outgoing server (SMTP), set the This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) check box.
Change the number in the Outgoing server (SMTP) field to 465, then click OK.
Click Test Account Settings. After a moment you should see a message that says all tests were completed successfully. If not, go back to the start of this procedure and check your work.
Once you see the success message, click Next then Finish.

That's the last step in the procedure to configure Outlook for Gmail. Now you can use the CTRL-1 keyboard shortcut to go to the Mail view.

Next press F9 to send and receive all mail. This downloads messages from Gmail. Seeing them in the Inbox will show that you were able to successfully configure Gmail as an Outlook email account.

Firefox toolbar with live notifications from DIGG

Digg has just released a new extension for Firefox 3 that integrates whatever page you're on with the popular social news site. Included are handy things like a real-time pop-up window that notifies you when friends have dugg something, or when new stories hit the front pages of various sections. There's also a toolbar that can be toggled on the top of your browser which shows you if a page you're on has been submitted to Digg along with options to submit it yourself or read the user comments.

The extension only works in Firefox 3 but joins a previously existing offering that displays most of the same information from a drop down command menu. The newer version has a much more svelte look that can be toggled to exist off-screen with a click of a button.

One thing that's missing, and something I hope gets added in a future version is a way to get real-time notifications when certain stories hit the upcoming section. As I've ranted about before, the upcoming section is harder to parse than it used to be, even with the inclusion of the recommendation engine. Being able to pick out stories you want to hear about based on what site they're coming from, or with certain keywords would make it an extension worth keeping installed.

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, which is to be held from August 8-24 2008, will be available on YouTube for 77 territories where digital rights have not been sold, or have been acquired on a non-exclusive basis. This was conveyed by International Olympic Committee.

Come August 22 and Indian cell users will finally be able to get their hands on an ‘official’ iPhone in the country with leading service providers Vodafone and Airtel launching the touch-screen handset on that day.
“iPhone has been an iconic technological revelation of this year,” Bharti Airtel’s president for mobile services, Sanjay Kapoor, said on Wednesday in a statement.

When contacted, Vodafone Essar officials were quick to point out that they would also be unveiling the second-generation iPhone on August 22. However, both the firms refused to divulge price details.

“We are awaiting an official confirmation from Apple before we can do that,” said Vodafone Essar’s marketing
director, Harit Nagpal.

However, sources revealed that both telecos could reveal their price points within this week. And it may not be
as cheap as in the US since the Indian telecom market is already subsidised with each call costing only a few paise as against much higher tariffs in the American market.

Still, telecom analysts expect the Apple-made iPhone (which retails in the US at $199 – about Rs 8,300 – for 8Gb version and at $299 – Rs 12,500 – for 16Gb) to give other existing cell-manufacturers a run for their money.

Top antivirus/spyware programs

Software that integrates antivirus and spyware removal is becoming more common, but separate solutions are usually more thorough and offer you a better feature set. As newer products are released, it’s important to read reviews and see how “all-in-one” solutions stack up. Some fall victim to overkill with too many programs on their PC for threat protection. Multiple programs that perform the same functions can interfere with each other. If you have one solid antivirus program and one solid spy/adware tool, you should be in good shape.

I can only comment on the products I have used extensively. There are very good free options out there and I try to take advantage of them.

For antivirus protection, I use a program called Avast. The home edition is free with yearly registration renewal. I have been using it for years and am very content.

For spyware and adware, I use the free versions of Ad-Aware. The free versions do not do real-time scanning (which I recommend for most users), but I do manual scans once every few days or so, and my PC is clean as a whistle.

The last program I use is CCleaner. It’s a system optimizer program that basically cleans your computer of broken files and DLLs from removed software. It will also clean out temporary directories, etc.

This is a 600-dpi laser that churns out 15 pages per minute. It has a 150-sheet input tray and a USB interface (cable not included). It's compatible with Windows and Mac systems. HP supplies a starter toner cartridge that should yield about 750 pages; replacement cartridges will give you double that number.

And, yes, I know the toner is expensive: printer consumables always are. You can't change that, but you can try to get the best possible deal on the printer itself. Fifty bucks for a laser? That's tough to beat.

Print your boarding pass in the hotel lobby

I have to admit that I’m rather stunned at the number of hotels I’ve stayed at recently that are now allowing you to print your boarding pass for your flight from a walk up kiosk FREE OF CHARGE! This is from the same industry that charges $3.50 for a bottle of water in your room and a $1 per page for an incoming fax ($4 per page if you stay at the downtown Chicago Hyatt).

It’s easy! You walk up, click the mouse to kill the screen saver and there is already a page up with links to most if not all of the airlines. Click on the one you want and check in for your flight. Print your boarding pass on the attached laser printer and walk away. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining and actually appreciate this service tremendously. I’m just shocked that they don’t try to charge for it (yet). If your hotel doesn’t have this yet, fill out those little survey cards in your room and ask, why not? My last 3 hotel stays offered this.

Mobile TV is a Total Waste of Time

Mobile TV just doesn’t seem to die. For years now, I’ve heard from countless companies that they’re going to provide the “real” Mobile TV experience that will totally change the way we enjoy television. All the while, I’ve laughed to myself wondering if these companies will ever realize that time has already passed them by.

To prove my point, yet another Mobile TV solution has died. According to published reports in Germany, an effort by Mobile 3.0 to offer Mobile TV services was pushed aside due to its desire to support paid TV and work over DVB-H.

Didn’t Mobile 3.0 get the memo? Mobile TV is dead in the water.

Let’s figure out why it’s dead, shall we?

First off, the Slingbox has made it abundantly clear to all of us that Mobile TV doesn’t really make much sense. If I can watch all of my home programming no matter where I am, for free, with the help of an Internet connection and laptop, which is almost always with me, why would I pay for, or even use, a Mobile TV solution?

Oh, and what about Hulu and the rest of these video services that allow me to watch practically any show I want? Sure, it may not be the same feeling, considering I’m streaming or buying the show after it has already aired, and it requires that same broadband connection, but who cares? At least I’m getting something out of it from a reputable source instead of paying more for something I barely want to watch.

And perhaps that’s where the biggest issue comes along for Mobile TV: no one wants to pay. More often than not, Mobile TV services will say that you’ll need to pay to use it. Why would I want to do that? You mean to tell me that in order to watch your crappy programming, I’ll need to pay a set fee for use of the service, on top of the fee I pay to have Internet access? Sorry, but that doesn’t seem quite right to me.

I should also point out that most of these Mobile TV services seem to forget that battery concerns are real, user interfaces really do matter, and more often than not, we don’t really want to watch TV on a junky little cell phone screen.

More companies will undoubtedly crop up and claim to have the solution to making more people use Mobile TV, but none will work.

We don’t want Mobile TV because it doesn’t make any sense. And because it doesn’t make any sense, it’s failing – miserably.

Apple releases iPhone Update 2.0.1

The first update to what some thought was a buggy iPhone 2.0 release has arrived.

In its typical terse style, Apple didn't go into details on what the new software fixed. According to Apple iPhone software 2.0.1 contains "bug fixes."

At this time the 249MB update is only available by connecting the iPhone to your computer and downloading through iTunes. iTunes will then prompt you to install the software and take care of the update procedure.

Lenovo S10 : Cheapest notebook with Good Configuration at Only $399

IBM’s former notebooks division, now part of Lenovo, appears to be moving much faster these days. The company today announced a $399 notebook netbook under its Ideapad brand (Thinkpad=business, Ideapad=consumer) for the simple activities in your computer life

The new Ideapad S10, scheduled to become available in October, expands Lenovo’s notebook family in the entry-level market and continues a trend that has begun with Asus’ Eee PC. Don’t expect fancy features besides its compact size (10.2” screen) as well as a light weight (just over 2 pounds), but, on most days, basic functionality is all what you need anyway and a device such as the S10 may be all you need.

There is Wi-Fi, a webcam, two USB ports, a 4-in-1 multicard reader, an ExpressCard slot, an 80 GB or 160 GB hard drive, 512 MB or 1 GB of main memory and Windows XP. A real netbook, of course, also needs Intel’s Atom processor these days, so it is no surprise that the S10 in fact will come with an Atom processor. So far it is unclear whether this will be a CPU based on the Diamondville or Silverthorne core. However, due to the high price of Silverthorne CPUs and the relatively small benefit of additional power consumption appears to be prompting netbook manufacturers to use Diamondville Z-series processors, while Silverthorne chips are more likely to be used in (more expensive) mobile Internet devices (MIDs).

According to Lenovo, “the processing performance and storage make the Ideapad S10 ideal for accommodating a variety of data, from a user’s digital music inventory to a student’s homework assignments and more.”

Prices for the 1”-thin S10 will start at $399.

Get Paid to Write Reviews on Your Blog

There are several relatively easy ways to make some money from your blog such as using Google AdSense, selling private ad spots, and writing reviews. The downside with using Google AdSense and trying to sell private ad spots is your blog must have enough traffic to generate the clicks or page impressions. My guess is most of you aren’t getting hundreds of visitors to your blog each day (not yet at least) so you aren’t making much money from those methods of advertising.

So where does that leave us? If you haven’t heard of writing reviews on your blog to generate a decent stream of income then you might want to check it out.

How does writing reviews make me money?

It’s actually easier than you think. The first step is to sign up with a blog review network and submit your blog. Some of these companies have rules in place like the age of your blog (at least 6 months old, etc), where it’s hosted (blogspot, wordpress, etc), and page rank. They try to weed out spam blog sites which are usually not very old or of good quality. Make sure you read the fine print before you spend your time applying only to find out you don’t qualify.

Assuming your blog is approved, you can now browse the review marketplace looking for reviews to write about or another option is to wait for someone to approach you. I recommend you be the aggressor and sift through the marketplace so you can start making money asap.

Once you find a review you’d like to write about and meet the criteria to qualify, just take it and begin. You’ll create your blog post and follow the requirements of the reviewer, then submit it for approval. After it’s approved, you get paid. Pretty easy huh?

What blog review networks do you recommend?

There are several companies out there who pay you to write reviews on your blog but only two of them are worth talking about in my opinion. They are Sponsored Reviews and Pay Per Post.

Sponsored Reviews is great because they allow you to search for advertisers directly and bid on jobs. Their bidding system allows you to negotiate rates with advertisers in order to maximize your earnings. They also provide the largest payout of all review networks by only taking a 35% commission for their services. That means you can earn anything from $10 to 500+ for each review. Their user interface is one of the better ones out there and the only drawback to their service is the lack of advertisers. I’m sure it will continue to grow it’s advertising base so they are at least worth a look.

One other perk is their affiliate program. Earn up to $175 per Advertiser and $90 Per Blogger referred. Payouts are based on money spent by the advertiser and money earned by the blogger. See the chart below for payouts. Their average advertiser spends several hundred dollars so most referrals will be worth at least $25 (according to their website).

You’ll then want to put one of their ads on your site or a text link to start taking advantage of their referral bonuses. Can’t hurt to get an ad on your blog right? Get started with Sponsored Reviews now.

Next up we have PayPerPost which is another great pay for review site. They offer the largest sponsored blogging network with the greatest amount of offers along with a forum where bloggers can post questions, etc. They also pay you a $20 bonus after you complete your first review post. The review post is easy…you just need to write about PayPerPost and they give you $20. Pretty quick way to make a quick $20.

One bad thing I noticed while browsing their marketplace is the restrictions on a few of the reviews. For example, you couldn’t write a review and post it on blogspot.com, wordpress.com, or myspace.com and you must be located in North America, Asia, or Europe only. That doesn’t mean if you have a blogger blog or wordpress blog using your own domain or hosted on your own site you can’t write a review. All I’m saying is make sure you read the review details carefully so you don’t waste your time writing a post only to discover you won’t get credit for it.

They also have a scoring system which might be a barrier to you on some post reviews. It’s usually the higher payouts that are looking for nice reviews from established high ranking sites. They utilize Google Page Rank and Amazon’s Alexa rankings to factor in what your site’s “score” will be.

PayPerPost also offers a referral affiliate program with some pretty nice payouts as well. You will get paid $15 for each referral once the referees first blog posting is reviewed, approved and then finally accepted 30 days later. This means they need to go all the way through the process in order for it to be a legit referral. Again, not a bad payout for just putting a banner or link on your blog. It’s cool because you can see which referrals you currently have signed up and the total amount you potentially could earn (assuming they convert all the way mentioned above).

Summary

If I were you, I’d sign up for both Sponsored Reviews and PayPerPost and see which one works best for you. There is no rule preventing you from having two accounts and writing reviews from both sites and you can promote whichever you choose. That’s what I did and it also gives you a bigger selection of available reviews to write. After you sign up, make sure you get some affiliate banners on your blog so you have another avenue to make money. Just imagine if you write a dozen or so reviews a month and get a couple referrals. You could easily earn a few hundred extra bucks a month for some pretty minimal work!

Windows XP SP3 Arrives on Automatic Updates

Windows XP Service Pack 3 hit the RTM milestone on April 21, 2008, was released unofficially on April 29, and then finally arrived on Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center on May 6. When asked when automatic distribution would begin, Microsoft insisted on saying "early summer" while the community speculated various dates.

Over two months later, Microsoft has finally released the third (and probably last) service pack for Windows XP x86 via Automatic Updates (AU). XP users who have not yet manually chosen to download the service pack and who have their Windows Update set to "automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them" will receive SP3 now that it has been marked by Microsoft as "Recommended." If you do not get SP3 automatically yet, don't sweat it. Microsoft has previously said that distribution through AU is done in a staggered manner so that the company's servers can handle the load. Those who still want to avoid the update without changing their Windows Update settings can use the Windows Service Pack Blocker Tool Kit.

The final build of SP3 (5512) reportedly includes 1,073 fixes, including every security update, out-of-band release, and hotfix released since Windows XP SP2 hit Microsoft's servers back in August 2004. Worth checking out are the SP3 release notes and the MUI pack. Also, make sure you know what to do with your version of Internet Explorer before installing the service pack.

YouTube Videos Coming to AdSense

According to early reports from the Associated Press and Variety, Google is set to make a major announcement tomorrow concerning YouTube integration with AdSense. Selected YouTube videos will be available to AdSense publishers and will appear wrapped in banner ads.

The AP offers auto websites selecting topical videos from YouTube about cars to run along with AdSense banner ads on their sites. If the report is correct, there's a whole lot of potential here. Though cynics have said that there's little hope for video outside YouTube, small video ad networks insist that there's a growing, thriving ecosystem of niche video sites just waiting for more and better content and ads.

Monetization of YouTube has always been the big question since Google Acquired the site. While other video hosting companies sought content first and then tried to build out their ad networks, it's only logical that the biggest online ad network in the world would fold the best content from the biggest video site in the world into its offerings. Ads have been run along side a very select few user channels on the YouTube site for a handful of months but these reports indicate that the program will be made much wider and be taken off of the site all around the web. Google has run very limited video advertising already but nothing like what it could do with YouTube's huge catalog. The ads will be persistent banners outside the frame and fading in-frame overlays.

It's a simple story, but if it is true it is going to blow the world of online video and advertising wide open.

You can now easily store web pages, images and other HTML content to Google Documents using gDocsBar - a recommended Firefox add-on for Google Docs users.

Google Docs maintains the original formatting of web pages and the hyperlinks very similar to Google Notebook or other web clipping software discussed before.

To save web pages in Google Docs, highlight the content with your mouse and drag that selection onto the gDocsBar window. Your web clipping will be saved as a new document in Google Docs.

Step 1: Open your PPT presentation file inside PowerPoint and switch to Slide Show menu to setup the exact time duration for each slide. You have two choices here:

a) Use Record Narration if you want to include audio in your presentations. Record your voice as your move through the slides and say yes when you are prompted to save the changes.

b) Use Rehearse Timings for silent PowerPoint videos. This option lets you define how long a slide should display on the screen before the presentation move to the next slide.

Step 2: Now go to authorstream.com and upload the PPT file you saved in Step 1. AuthorStream is a PowerPoint hosting service where you can PPT files as large as 1 GB. It’s again a good service though not so popular as Slideshare.

Step 3: When you are done uploading the PPT file to the web, Author Stream will convert the PowerPoint file into a MPEG4 video (mp4) that can be directly uploaded to YouTube or you can watch it on an iPod.

This process may take some time but you’ll get an email notification as soon as your PowerPoint video is ready for download from the web.

The conversion is not instant but definitely worth the wait. And the quality of video created from PPT files is brilliant.

There’s more - other than converting PPT to video, AuthorStream will also create a video podcast version of your presentation that can be directly imported into iTunes. This could a good opportunity for educators who have piles of PPT files on their computer that can be shared with the world.

Update: If you have the budget, you can use a screen recording application like Camtasia Studio to record PowerPoint presentations as video on your desktop.

Free screencasting software like Camstudio may also also record PPT playback but I think the above method is simpler as it takes care of conversion as well as video hosting.

Teen Social Network myYearbook Raises $13 Million

It's no Facebook, but social site MyYearbook can still play with the popular kids: the site has announced $13 million in Series B venture funding. The round was led by Norwest Venture Partners with existing investors US Venture Partners and First Round Capital chipping in as well. Norwest's Sergio Monsalve has joined the site's board of directors.

Founded in 2005 when co-founder Catherine Cook was a sophomore in high school (the two other co-founders are her older brothers Dave and Geoff, who serves as CEO), MyYearbook focuses on a decidedly younger demographic than Facebook and even News Corp.'s MySpace, which is frequently considered to be a teen hub. The site currently has a major partnership, for example, with the Teen Choice Awards hosted by youth sensation Miley Cyrus. Not exactly a pick for the over-21 crowd.

With the new funding round, MyYearbook has raised $16.8 million total. The purpose for raising so much wasn't directly addressed by the site, with a release ambiguously saying that it will be used to "develop new services for its members and continue to drive revenue." Right now, per Hitwise, the site pulls in about 10 million unique visitors per month, and 2 billion page views. That's still small compared with Facebook and MySpace, but nothing to sneer at either.

Rumors swirled last year that the site was going to be acquired by InterActiveCorp; they weren't true, stemming from a misunderstanding after the site gave a "mock pitch" to IAC czar Barry Diller at a conference.

MagicPad : Copy and Paste Finally Coming to the iPhone

opy and Paste has long been one of the most requested features on the iPhone, and its continued absence has been both frustrating and confusing for many. How can it be that the iPhone - running a finely tuned version of Mac OS X - is unable to perform functions that have been included in text editors since the 80’s?

MagicPad, a new application from Proximi that is currently waiting for approval on Apple’s App Store, is finally making copy and paste a reality on the iPhone. The application is essentially an improved version of “Notes”, and features rich text editing, allowing users to modify font type, size, and color. And best of all, it allows for copy and paste. Users need only drag their fingers over text to select it, and adjustments can then be made on a menubar that appears above the onscreen keyboard (see the video below).

Unfortunately, MagicPad isn’t going to bring true Copy-and-Paste to the iPhone, as there will be no way to copy text between applications (say, from Safari to the Mail client). You’ll be able to copy and paste between multiple notes within MagicPad, which will make it a step up from Notes, but in reality it serves as more of a proof of concept than a solution.

So when will we finally get true, systemwide, copy and paste? Earlier this month, Apple’s Greg Joswiak finally commented on the issue, explaining that it was on Apple’s to-do list but that it hasn’t been a priority. The lengthy wait is almost certainly due to issues with creating an intuitive interface for copy and paste on the iPhone’s buttonless touchscreen. MagicPad’s interface looks like it works well enough, but it takes up a large portion of screen real estate and is less elegant than what we’ll probably see from Apple.

A majority of Chinese net users go online via broadban

China now has the world's largest net-using population, say official figures.

More than 253 million people in the country are now online, according to statistics from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

The figure is higher than the 223 million that the US mustered in June, according to Nielsen Online.

Net penetration in the US stands at 71% compared to 19% in China suggesting it will eventually vastly outstrip the US.

The development is significant because the US has had the largest net-using population since records of how many people were online started to be kept.

"This is the first time the number has drastically surpassed the United States, becoming the world's number one," said a statement from the CNNIC, the nation's official net monitoring body.

The 2008 figure is up 56% in a year, said CNNIC. Analysts expect the total to grow by about 18% per annum and hit 490 million by 2012.

About 95% of those going online connect via high-speed links. Take up of broadband has been boosted by deals offered by China's fixed line phone firms as they fight to win customers away from mobile operators.

China's mobile phone-using population stands at about 500 million people.

Despite having a greater number of people online, China's net economy still has a long way to go to match or exceed that of the US or even that of South Korea.

Figures from Analysys International said China's net firms reported total revenues of $5.9bn (£2.96bn) in 2007. By contrast net advertising revenue alone for US firms in 2007 stood at $21.2bn (£10.6bn).

Apple Hiring iPhone Hackers

Apple has posted a job opportunity for a position it calls “iPhone Security Engineer.” An “exceptional individual” will get the chance to “have a major impact on Apple’s embedded operating system products,” according to the job posting.

Job requirements and useful experience include “passion for developing “proof of concept attacks, industry exposure to and knowledge of OS security and UNIX internals” and “involvement in reverse engineering and security communities.”

The company appears to be taking seriously recent criticisms of its nonchalance toward patching iPhone security holes and its less-than-full-embrace by the enterprise community.

Google Index Reaches 1 Trillion URLs

Three years after Google (NSDQ: GOOG) declared that its index was three times larger than any other search engine and then declined to cite a specific number to support that claim, it was widely believed that Google had tired of index one-upmanship and that it would no longer be measuring its index.

Well, Google has its yardstick in hand once again.

Two Google engineers on Friday said that Google's index of the Web now contains 1 trillion unique URLs.

That's a lot of URLs. However, there's a lot of chaff in there. Consider that "Google" alone returns 2,740,000,000 Google search results, "Yahoo" returns 2,930,000,000, and "eBay" returns 1,080,000,000. Add up the number of results generated by searching for the top 100 keywords and you'd have a significant fraction of 1 trillion.

In 1998, when Google opened for business, it had 26 million URLs. By 2000, it had reached 1 billion. In 2005, Google claimed it had more than 8 billion Web pages in its index, at least until it took the index count off its home page. In 2008, Google's measure of the Web is 1 trillion Web pages.

So it appears that Google's index is exploding with new Web pages. From 2000 to 2005, Google's index grew by a factor of 8. From 2005 to 2008, it grew by a factor of 125.

There you have evidence of the information explosion that Google and other companies are trying to fight through the Information Overload Research Group.

Maybe.

Google software engineers Jesse Alpert and Nissan Hajaj admit that they don't really know how many unique Web pages there are. And they acknowledge that Web URLs are essentially infinite because dynamic page generation for things like future calendar months means there's always another page to crawl. "But we're proud to have the most comprehensive index of any search engine," they say in a blog post.

So forget the math. The numbers are too slippery. Really, this is about bragging rights.

Microsoft trueSpace: Free Alternative to 3ds Max, Google Sketchup

trueSpace is a 3D modeling and animation software for Windows that lets you create realistic 3D scenes from scratch, walk-throughs, games, etc. You can also import characters created in other software like AutoCAD, 3ds Max, Adobe Illustrator, etc.

trueSpace used to sell for $600 but then Microsoft acquired the company and released trueSpace as a free download probably in response to SketchUp that’s owned by Google.

The idea is to let users create building and landscapes for Virtual Earth just like one can use SketchUp to create 3D models for Google Earth (SketchUp review).

If you are from the education community, you’ll especially love trueSpace for simulations.

Like with any other 3D authoring software, there’s a steep learning curve involved with trueSpace but if you are looking for a good alternative to 3DS Max or Blender, Microsoft trueSpace is available at a price that may be hard to beat.

Create an easy-access keyboard-shortcut list

If I could remember any, I would begin this post with an anecdote about how wonderful a good memory can be.

Instead, I'll just tell you how to put all your keyboard shortcuts and Windows commands in a text file that you can open quickly via keystrokes, or keep minimized for even faster access. And you can do it all without grabbing your mouse.

Start by finding a list of keyboard shortcuts. The one Microsoft put together works for me. Select all the text on the page from "General keyboard shortcuts" to just above "Other information." Press Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard. (That's one of the few shortcuts I can actually remember.)

Open Notepad by pressing the Windows key (or Ctrl-Esc) and N. You can also open it by pressing the Windows key and R (if necessary), typing notepad.exe, and pressing Enter.

Press Ctrl-V to paste the plain text into a blank file, and type Alt-F, A to open the Save As dialog box. Give the file a name--"shortcuts.txt" works for me. Just be sure to use the ".txt" file extension and save the file to your desktop or some other location that's easy to access.

Now open the file in Notepad and either make the Notepad window inconspicuous so it doesn't block your work apps, or keep it minimized and Alt-Tab to Notepad when you need to refer to the file. To move or resize the Notepad window (without using your mouse, of course), press Alt-spacebar, S, and then use the arrow keys to adjust the window size.

If you need to create a custom keyboard shortcut to open Notepad, press the Windows key and use the arrow and Enter keys to navigate to the Notepad shortcut on the Start menu (All Programs > Accessories > Notepad). Press the context-menu--which is sometimes called the application key--and then type R. (Note that Shift-F10 opens this menu in some applications.)

Use the Tab and arrow keys to navigate to the Shortcut keyboard text box under the Shortcut tab. Type the keystroke combination of your choice (Ctrl-Alt-N is one possibility), and press Enter.

Add Windows' commands to the list
Be sure to add your custom keyboard shortcuts to your shortcuts.txt file. While you have the file open, add all those commands you always forget about when you want to use Windows' command line to open a program or system tool. Microsoft provides a list of commands to open Control Panel applets.

On their site they state:

Microsoft has long offered desktop tools to help you check compatibility of existing software programs and hardware devices with Windows Vista.

For instance, you could run the Upgrade Advisor on an XP computer to know if that old machine can afford to run Vista. The problem is that you can check Vista compatibility of only installed software or hardware that’s already attached to the computer.

How do you know if that printer & scanner lying in the basement would work with Vista. Or will that old copy of Photoshop install successfully on your new Windows Vista computer?

Google will end their AdSense Referrals program next month - this will even apply to software programs like Firefox and the Google Pack that convert fairly well on technology & software related websites.

If you are looking for alternatives to AdSense Referrals, try Microsoft Affiliate. This is much like the AdSense Referrals program though limited to two products - Windows Live Toolbar and OneCare, an anti-virus software from Microsoft.

Windows Live Toolbar is free and Microsoft will pay you $1 for every successful installation on a computer based in US. You can promote the Toolbar on your blog either through banner ads or regular text links.

In the case of Windows Live OneCare, you get paid $3 for every download completed on a computer that’s located either in Canada or US.

iPhone 2.0 unlock tool close to release

The iPhone Dev Team is close to releasing a free software tool designed to unlock the iPhone 3G, or an iPhone running Software version 2.0.

The team last week managed to break its way into the new software hours before it was officially launched. And, while the developers did say that unlocking the device was a hard task, they're now sufficiently familiar with the software that future versions should be easier to build.

The team aim to create solutions hackers can use if they want to use the iPhone on unapproved networks (albeit for slight loss of facility) and/or in order to install non-Apple approved applications on the device.

Last night, the iPhone Dev Team released a video showing the software in action, unlocking an iPhone, suggesting imminent release of the tookit, called iPhone Pwnage.

"We've added lots of new features, including 2.0 support, spotlight file indexing of .ipsws, canned web-searches, installer custom configuration, custom root partitions and various other things that you'll see on the release. Release date is soon," the developers wrote.

How To Remove SpyWare, AdWare Clean and Fix Windows

Recently my company gave me a laptop to use for work. It was riddled with SpyWare and AdWare. The instant I fired up IE the Virus and SpyWare would trigger up and redirect me to some random ad laden web page requesting me to download even more SpyWare. Since reinstalling the OS was not an option I had to clean up the system on my own somehow. I am listing a bunch of software that you’ll need before we proceed.

Update Window

The first step is to make sure your windows is updated with the latest security patches and fixes. If you are running Windows XP make sure you have installed Service Pack 2. Once you are done installing service pack 2 you should run Windows update and get the latest patches. Another alternative is to use AutoPatcher this is a utility which will download all the required patches and security fixes from Microsoft and store it in a folder on your system which you can later reuse to apply to other computers that you need to update.

Run A Full Scan Using AntiVirus and AntiSpyware Softwares.

There are a number of free AntiVirus software I have for now listed two of them. Virus can do all sorts of weird things to your computer. For example on my laptop the virus disabled the “View Hidden Files” option, even though I checked the option it would reset it back, it also set a number of scheduled tasks in my Task Scheduler to call a number of different copies of the Virus. Run a full scan of the system. Next run a Anti-SpyWare software I highly recommend AdAware.

Clean Up Your Start Up Items.

Most SpyWare and Virus configure your start up items to run the Virus when you boot up or log into your system. Use the MsConfig tool in windows to check which items are being loaded at start up. If you see any suspicious looking entries uncheck them also identify which file is being called and manually delete it. Sometime this might not work like in my case I had to log into widows using safe mode (When Windows is booting up press F8 you will see an option to load windows under safe mode) and delete the offending file. Use the process explorer tool to see if the processing running on your system are all legitimate. Also use AutoRuns to delete any entries that look suspicious especially DLL that are unsigned and have random looking names.

Clean Up And Optimise Your System.

There are a number of tools that can clean your system of unwanted and unused temporary files and registry entries. One of the best tools that I have found so far is CCleaner which provides a number of advanced options to clean up your system. Try to keep the number of items that start up when you boot the system to a minimum.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure.

Better safe than sorry. Ditch IE period and get FireFox. Run an Anti-Virus software and do a full scan periodically. Also do a full Anti-SpyWare scan periodically. Also scan external drives like thumb drives and external hard disk when you connect it to the computer.

Now some people assume that Amazon S3 is a storage service meant primarily for web start-ups who store data in-the-cloud but that’s not correct because just about anyone (home users included) can benefit from S3.

Jungle Disk - This is available for Mac, Windows, Linux and there’s also a portable version for your USB computer. Jungle Disk will set you back by $20 per license but that includes all three platforms and they also provide a web interface to manage your files on S3.

Jungle Disk has a useful “Automatic Backup” features that will backup files and folders from your local hard drive onto Amazon S3 automatically. Thus it can be used as a decent alternative to online backup services like Mozy, Carbonite, etc.

Note: There really isn’t a thing called ‘folders’ per se on the S3 but that is the topic of another day. For now, just assume that you can create ‘folders’ and have files inside them.

WordPress plugin - This comes handy if you to stores files on Amazon S3 rather than using the default “uploads folder” of WordPress।

Once the WordPress S3 plugin is installed and activated, you’ll see an extra icon (storage cylinder) in your “Add Media” Bar. This will allow you to upload files to your Amazon S3 account and can be used inside the Wordpress interface.

Just wanted to quickly one of the handiest utilities I’ve found in the last several years. It’s called KeePass Password Safe. Yes, a password manager.

Years ago I always looked at utilities like these with a dubious eye. They seemed like such a great way to lose all your passwords for everything at the same time. Instead of some hacker getting a few random cookies, or a password here and there, you make it easy for them by offering a centralized repo!

My attitude changed slightly a few months ago when I started working for a new company. The other admins there both used KeePass, and swore by it. Initially scoffing, I quickly realized what a boon it was to our security.

Instead of choosing easy to guess semi-dictionary based passwords, they would use KeePass to generate cryptic 150+ bit passwords for everything. Mere mortals had no hope of memorizing these things. So I switched, and was quickly impressed.

You can categorize your passwords, associate usernames and links, add comments, even set up schedules to expire the passwords on. There’s version of Windows, OSX, and Linux I believe, so its fairly portable.

In my test run, the software successfully managed to extract text from an old manuscript with excellent accuracy. I then tried Abbyy FineReader 9 with a photograph of the Wall Street Journal newspaper (credit) that was captured with a digital camera and the results were equally impressive.

Abbyy 9 also features a Screenshot Reader utility that can directly extract text from any area of your desktop screen be it a wallpaper, a Flash presentation or a photo on Flickr.

The built-in spell checker suggests spellings and will help you quickly fix words that could be recognized by the Abbyy FineReader. The scanned documents can then be exported as searchable PDF files, Word documents or even HTML web pages.

Adobe Acrobat 9 – Adobe Acrobat (not the free Adobe Reader) can directly scan paper documents to searchable PDF documents.

In the test run, Acrobat could accurately scan a newspaper clipping with fairly high level of noise though it did not manage to preserve the layout while exporting the scanned image to a Word document.

Acrobat is again a commercial software but it does come bundled with some scanners.

SimpleOCR – Unlike Abbyy FineReader or Adobe Acrobat, Simple OCR software is a fairly basic solution but it is completely free and may appeal to budget conscious consumers.

Simple OCR lets you proof-read the scanned image as text so you can fix inaccuracies before exporting the scanned image as plain text.

Scribd iPaper – If you have piles of paper documents in your office, you can easily get rid of them by sending everything in a snail mail to Scribd – this service will convert all your paper clutter into digital documents for free.

Scribd will also run your documents through their own OCR software so everything remains searchable as well.

Evernote – This is not an OCR software but it can easily recognized text in image. So if you have scanned a bunch of electricity bill receipts as images, you may use Evernote to locate them on the hard drive. The software is free and available for Mac and Windows.

Qipit, Snapter and ScanR are pretty similar solutions – they help use a digital camera or a mobile phone as a scanner. You capture a newspaper clipping, a page from a magazine or the conference room whiteboard room with your camera phone and turn to these services for extracting text out of the images.

How to manage your scanned documents ?

Once you have converted your scanned images into scanned documents, you can bulk upload them to Google Docs (that comes with Google Apps) via email.

Alternatively, you can put everything on an hard drive and index them using Google Desktop search or via Windows Vista’s built-in search indexer.

Sharing huge size files online

Lately i came across a situation where i had to share a big video file (75MB after ziping) to one of my friend abroad. I was confident that i could either use Gmail or Yahoo service to send the zip file accross, but to my surprise both this services failed it had 10MB email attachement limitation.. Even some other prominent file hosting services had restriction of 10MB to 20MB restriction. I then googled for some possible solution on the internet, and found two options. 1. To split the file, make it smaller in size and then attach and send. 2. Use premimun file hosting services to transfer the huge files.

I was able to find many video splitter/ file splitter software, but to add to my surprize all of them had restrictions... in terms of time to split or to save or to buy the software to save the file, some ran its logo on the video. I was very dissapointed. But I came across this TOTALLY free software which made my day. This is a simple, easy to use freeware utility that helps the user split huge files into chunks of small sizes that can be recombined at ease to retrieve the original file. Moreover you needn't have the File Splitter for the re-combination.

Large file hosting services sites like Rapidshare, Megaupload or Yousendit lets you upload files on the web upto a few hundred MBs. Gigasize is a new entrant that lets you send files upto 1 GB in size. You can again apply the splitter rule here so even if the file size exceeds the 1 GB limit, split it into smaller chunks and then upload them.

New York gets the iPhone 3G

At Apple and AT&T stores in Manhattan, eager first-day buyers of the iPhone 3G get their hands on Apple's upgraded smartphone Friday morning. But does it really take 10 to 15 minutes to get set up? McCarthy, 7:08 a.m. ET at the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue: There's a HUGE gathering of cop cars across the street, lights flashing and all, but it doesn't appear to be iPhone-related.

A company called Invisible Shield is attempting to placate the masses and get in some cheap marketing by tossing t-shirts into the crowd, which is now snaked around the sidewalk in front of the store.

McCarthy, 7:10 a।m.: Apple store representatives are handing out bottled water, and the Waiting for Apples team is handing out apples. Looks like the cop cars are doing a routine drill. They're driving south down Fifth Avenue now.

McCarthy, 7:15 a.m.: The activists from Waiting for Apples have dismantled their "camp" to save up space.

McCarthy, 7:17 a.m.: Looks like Conde Nast is in on the promo stuff too. A whole lot of people are carrying copies of Wired.

McCarthy, 7:22 a.m.:Security is saying I don't look "credentialed" enough to be press, not letting me get a photo I wanted to. I just went around the other side, though. I think that he just wanted to exert authority and talk down to people.

McCarthy, 7:27 a.m.:News crews are everywhere. My impression is that the people waiting this year are even younger than last year, or maybe that's because I'm getting older. More dogs are in line than last year too. Greg Packer, last year's infamous first-in-line guy, is closer to No. 10 this year.

Across the Apple Store plaza, it looks as if people are gearing up for the taping of CBS' Early Show, including guerrilla marketers for Chik-Fil-A's "Eat mor chikin" campaign।

Reardon, 7:30 a.m. ET at the AT&T store on Upper West Side 95th and Broadway: With the exception of one guy, who camped out overnight in his sleeping bag, the AT&T store is relatively quiet. People didn't start showing up until around 4 a.m., store officials said.

Jeff Peidrahite, 35, lives just two blocks from the store. He arrived around 4 a.m. for the phone he said he's waited a year to buy. A current AT&T customer, Peidrahite said he is a huge Apple fan but wasn't going to buy the slower iPhone that came out last year. He also wasn't about to wait in the crazy line that started forming at Apple's 5th Avenue store last weekend.

"I'm a die-hard fan," he said. "But I wasn't going to camp out for it."

The bulk of the line at this location, which runs about halfway down the block, only arrived at the store around 7 a.m. For most, it seems like a smart strategy. The store has 60 phones, 20 of which are the 16GB models.

Natalie Green, 20, who arrived around 7:10 a.m. with her mother, lamented that she should have gotten up earlier. Green, who was toward the end of the line, most likely won't get a phone today. But she isn't deterred.

"I should have been here earlier," she said. "But it's not a big deal. If I don't get one today, I'll come back tomorrow."

McCarthy, 7:35 a.m.: I now have a cushy spot in the press section, though people keep asking me if I'm allowed to be standing here. I'm standing next to some local news crews who are wondering whether to prioritize coverage of the iPhone or of a murder in the Bronx.

McCarthy, 7:38 a.m.: Apple store representatives declined to tell me how many employees are on hand. It looks as if they will be doing a "gauntlet" of employees to usher people, as they did last year. Apple PR is having some issues dealing with foreign film crews who either don't speak much English or are claiming that they don't. They're trying to really pack everyone in.

McCarthy, 7:41 a.m.: There is massive cheering going on inside the Apple store. It sounds like the employees are revved up. There's a big press presence, but way fewer people are crammed into the press section than were there last year. There are fewer spectators too.
